Bio

Suman Roy has a proven track record in social planning programs, business leadership, and community initiatives in both the private and public sectors, locally, nationally, and globally. He is a business leader who prioritizes accountability while focusing on optimism and building community within his team and the community at large.

As a father, Roy wants to see his community prosper into a place where his daughter can feel safe crossing the street and where she can grow up in a community where she can reach her full potential.

As the Founder and CEO of Feed Scarborough, Roy saw the devastating impact of COVID-19 on the community. When many food banks were shutting their doors, Roy and a team of volunteers helped the most vulnerable in our community by delivering food to them and their families. His passion for helping others grew into the non-profit organization Feed Scarborough, which operates six food banks, community kitchens, community gardens, a healthy meal program, and is a business incubation. The success of this initiative helps more than 7500 people a week and works to raise awareness and help combat food insecurities in Scarborough.

Roy is no stranger to overcoming challenges. After moving to Toronto in 2001, he had nothing but a few dollars to his name. However, he persevered and built a successful career as a corporate and executive chef, working for companies such as Campbell Soup, the University of Toronto, Sodexo Canada, and Marriott International. He is also the author of an award-winning, best-selling book called “From Pemmican To Poutine – A Journey Through Canada’s Culinary History”.

Roy’s community service:

  • Chair for the Board of Directors for Scarborough Arts
  • Community Police Liaison Committee
  • Member of the Toronto Board of Health
  • Past Chair for the Board of Directors at Food Share Toronto; Canada’s largest food security and food justice organization.
  • Past Member of City of Toronto Strategic Council, Student Nutrition Program
  • Member of the Coalition for Healthy School Food; advocates and lobbies the Federal Government and the Senate on various food issues including Bill S228 (Child Health Protection Act) and Bill C291 (GMO Labeling legislation).
  • Past Member of the Toronto Food Policy Council; supported the launch of Toronto Youth Food Policy Council, which gives voice to younger generations.
  • Past Lecturer at Humber College, Durham College and Centennial College

He has dedicated his life to enriching the lives of others and positively impacting local communities. Speaking as a father, Roy believes every individual has a responsibility to make their communities safe, prosperous, and healthy.

“ I believe in Scarborough Southwest. It is only when we all prosper can a community flourish and accomplish greatness,” said Roy.
